Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect in band class?
Band is the only performance based class at Paint Valley Elementary School. You can expect that your student will play every day in class learning their instrument, pieces of music, and musical concepts. We will perform 2-4 group concerts a year for the parents to enjoy. But, most of all, we’re going to have a lot of fun creating music!
Can I do sports and still be in band?
Absolutely! Some of our best band members are in sports. Some of the sports that current band members are actually in right now are: Cross Country, Golf, Cheer Leading, and even Football!
I can't stay after school, can I still be in band?
YES! Band is letter graded class that meets during the school day! There are zero after school practices. The only times where transportation is required is for our concerts and there will be many months prior notice to plan or car pool.
What instruments can I play?
5th grade band students at Paint Valley can choose between these 6 instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, and Percussion.
How do I know what instrument to play?
We find that out at the instrument fitting! At a fitting the director and possibly others will try a number of instruments with coaching to find out the best instrument for your body type. After the fitting, the director will not tell you what you can or cannot play, but he will advise you to the instruments that will set you up for the most success.
I just know I want to play ______, do I still need to get fitted?
We highly recommend that you come in to get fitted. I have fit many students who have come in determined to play one instrument only to discover that that instrument would not have allowed the student to become the most successful. Do the instrument fitting; you may be surprised at what you learn.
How do I get an instrument?
It is highly encouraged that each band student rents their first instrument. Instrument rentals generally range from $30-$60 a month depending on the instrument and the music shop. Most shops will cover most repairs while you rent the instrument, and many have "rent to own" programs so each payment is going to pay down the cost of the instrument should the student choose to continue in band. Two options for renting instruments:
I found this instrument on E-bay, should I make a bid?
When it comes to musical instruments, a deal that seems too good to be true, generally isn't true. The internet and non music shops are full of "instrument shaped objects" that prey on well intentioned parents looking for less expensive instruments. These are not instruments; they will not play/stay in tune; repair shops will not fix them when they break; your student will not be successful "instrument shaped objects."
If you are set upon finding an instrument online, here is a short list of quality instrument brands. Be warned, instruments online can be in any condition and may require 100's of dollars in repairs before it is playable.
If financial restrictions prohibit renting an instrument from a music shop, Paint Valley Local Schools have a limited number of school instruments available to rent at a reduced cost. If this is the case, please contact the director to discuss further details and to set up a school-instrument rental agreement.
What else do I need for band, besides an instrument?
A complete required materials list can be found at this link. If you rent through Music and Arts, in addition to the instrument, they will provide the mouth piece, cork grease, valve oil, slide grease, swab, and book! All included in the rental program.
A note on reeds. The orange box Rico brand reeds are just fine for complete beginners, because beginners go through reeds so quickly. However, as soon as they can play eighth notes, we will want to transition to the higher quality Rico Royal, Vandorian, or Rico Grand Concert reeds. The larger the strength the better the tone. 2.5 is a good starting place for 5th grade with the intention of getting to a 3 by the end of the year.
